Hiring a Wedding Photographer

Wedding Photographer

It’s always good to get a professional’s perspective when it comes to wedding photography, so we asked Margie of Margie Woods Brown Photography a few simple questions to help guide us on what to look for when searching for a wedding photographer.

1. If you were having your own wedding, what one question would you ask a photographer before you hire them?

I want someone shooting my wedding that is passionate about capturing the love and all of the special moments, that’s why I like to shoot weddings. I am less interested in whether someone has a checklist of what they will shoot. I want them to be guided by their own heart and connection to the event. I want them to be able to be spontaneous as well as organized. I would also ask them to share images with me from their favorite wedding that they have shot, to get a sense for what is important to them in an image or a moment.

2. In your opinion, how important is it for a photographer to have a college degree or some type of formal education? Should one look for a photographer with a degree?

I don’t think college degrees are necessary in many fields, although many photographers I know have one. Many of them; however, have degrees in things other than photography. My degrees, for example are a BA in Comminication and a MA in Clinical Psychology. I use these degrees in many ways in my life and they inform my photography, but they are certainly not requirements for diving to my art. Most amazing photographers I know have just followed their passion with photography and practiced, practiced, practiced. Practice and dedication to growth as an artist go a long way.

3. What is the best way to find a good photographer? Are there any organizations that connect photographers to potential customers?

It’s always great to google photographers and look at their sites. Feel your way through their imagery and see how it makes you feel. PPA (Professional Photographers of America) is a great organization that showcases its members by area. I am a member of PPA and I love them!

4. What makes one photographer better than the other?

Certainly, technical ability is important and makes a huge difference. If someone has a great eye and cannot operate their camera or create a proper exposure, obviously that is a huge problem. I think that the most important aspect of a great photographer though is their vision and commitment to following it as an artist. I also think a great photographer is dedicated to their clients and invested in creating a good relationship with them.

5. What should one look for when hiring a photographer?

I think that one of the most important things is whether or not you feel comfortable and connected with the person. Of course you have to like their style too, but the connection is key, for this is essentially an intimate relationship. They are capturing some of your most precious moments and are being let into your life.

6. What other tips do you have for someone thinking of hiring a photographer but doesn’t know where to start?

Follow your gut. Do you love their images? Do they move you? Do you like the way they present and edit their images? Do you like what they have to say on their website and does that fit with you and your personality? What is your instant feeling when you meet them or see their work? Follow that. It’s just like meeting a new friend for the first time. Listen to your heart!
